State cuts force parents to change child’s school

The 8-year-old was diagnosed as a toddler with CHARGE Syndrome, a series of birth defects that include hearing, vision and developmental disabilities. When Nate turned 5, his parents, Scott and Allison Stahl of Colona, Ill., sent him to the Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville, about 140 miles away. He spent three years at the residential school in central Illinois until state budget cuts caused officials there to change the facility’s transportation policy.
